Like many organizations, the Boston Celtics began their analytics journey with on-premise infrastructure. However, as data volumes grew and the demand for computational resources increased, the limitations of this approach became apparent.

The team faced several challenges with their legacy infrastructure:

  • Limited computational power: The database servers, housed in a small room behind the CTO’s office, struggled to keep pace with the growing needs of the analytics team.
  • Security concerns: Providing secure access to systems for coaches and scouts on the road proved difficult.
  • Variable Workload: The analytics workload was highly variable, with intense spikes in activity following each game. Maintaining peak capacity on-premises was cost prohibitive.

Recognizing the need for a more flexible and scalable solution, the Celtics began to explore the potential of cloud computing and AWS.
